Review on islet ultrastructure imaging published in Diabetologia

In a new review on islet ultrastructure imaging published in Diabetologia, a team of authors from PLID and Janelia summarize major insights into islet cell function obtained with electron microscopy (EM) techniques. Starting with classical EM studies in the 50s and 60s revealing islet cell ultrastructure and the secretory pathway the authors show major highlights of 3D and correlative imaging. They also provide information on open access datasets as well as image analysis strategies. Finally, they give an exciting outlook on future work that will aim to integrate different modalities and large-scale imaging to understand structural islet changes in diabetes.
