Stefan Bornstein receives the Hellmut Otto Medal of the DDG for his pioneering contributions to diabetology

PLID scientist and clinician Professor Stefan Bornstein was awarded this year's Hellmut Otto Medal by the German Diabetes Society (DDG) at its annual conference. With this award the DDG is not only recognizing his outstanding achievements in diabetology, but also his commitment to promoting international cooperation and improving patient care.
Prof. Bornstein's achievements span various areas of medicine. His translational work in the field of islet cell transplantation and stem cell therapy is particularly noteworthy. He has also carried out groundbreaking research into the metabolic effects of corticotropic axis and adrenal function.
Not only his research, but also his commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic has gained international recognition. Prof. Bornstein played a key role in the development of guidelines and treatment recommendations for people with diabetes who have COVID-19. His work set international standards early in the pandemic.
Prof. Bornstein's social commitment is also impressive. He initiated the Transcampus between the Technical University of Dresden and King's College London, which serves as an example of successful German-British cooperation in science. His efforts to create various networks, including intensive German-Israeli connections, have also been recognized and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2018.
As a member of the Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Bornstein has continuously contributed to the advancement of science and his work has had a significant impact on the medical community worldwide.
