Species conservation & Animal welfare

Species conservation
At petZ, we are committed to species conservation by actively contributing to the preservation of endangered animal species in human care. To this end, we cooperate with Citizen Conservation, an initiative for the protection of endangered animal species through targeted conservation breeding. They coordinate various institutions and private individuals which are involved in the keeping and breeding of rare species. This preserves them and enables reintroduction projects.
These endangered species currently live at petZ:
The Central European fire salamander is vulnerable
More information on the endangerment and conservation breeding of the Central European fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) can be found at Citizen Conservation.
The Loiselle's cichlid is endangered
More information on the endangerment and conservation breeding of the Loiselle's cichlid (Ptychochromis loisellei) can be found at Citizen Conservation.
The Madagascar rainbowfish is endangered
More information on the endangerment and conservation breeding of the Madagascar rainbowfish (Bedotia madagascariensis) can be found at Citizen Conservation.
Animal welfare
We care deeply about our animals and their well-being. Animal welfare is therefore a top priority in all aspects of our work.
In terms of husbandry and care, we ensure species-appropriate accommodation in line with the needs of the respective animal species (e.g. space, climate, opportunities for retreat, social behavior). Additionally, regular care, species-appropriate nutrition, and veterinary care ensure the long-term health and well-being of our animals.
Animals are always treated with respect, care, and clear rules in a teaching and learning context. To avoid stress, our animals are also accustomed to interacting with humans before they are handled in the teaching and learning context.
We strictly adhere to the legal framework of the Animal Welfare Law. Our animal husbandry and care is approved, regularly inspected, comprehensively documented, and supervised by expert staff.
We take on educational responsibility by teaching respectful treatment of animals, setting clear boundaries to protect animal welfare, and reflecting together on human responsibility towards animals.
