Biotechnology, the science of the technical use of biological material, is an important next generation technology of this century. It is supposed to improve the global supply with healthy and nutritious food, enable effective treatment of severe diseases and provide chemicals, materials and energy in an environmentally benign and resource-efficient way. Central pillars of this development are understanding and directed manipulation of molecular structures and processes in biological systems. We focus on enzymology and enzyme technology to develop selective and effective catalysts for chemical reactions.
