Research in Polymer Chemistry
Defined and functional polymers are synthesized in solution and on surfaces at the Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry. The focus of the research are applications in the fields of medicin and biology.
From a single molecule to a whole polymer carpet
Different controlled-radical and ionic polymerizations are used in our research focussed on polymers in solution. The aim is the synthesis of defined and likewise bio-compatible macromolecules. Applications are found in the fields of e.g. drug delivery systems or cell cultivation. There is a major intersection between the research on polymers in solution and the field of polymerization on surfaces. For example, a decent amount of the polymers synthesized in solution is later used to modify surfaces via grafting-to. Nevertheless there is a separated research topic focussing on various polymerization techniques using the grafting-from approach.
