Prof. Oliver Thorn-Seshold
Oliver moved to the TU Dresden in October 2024 to take up the Chair of Organic Chemistry 2 (Chemical Biology).
Oliver was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1985. He studied chemistry at the University of Sydney with an exchange semester to the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, then moved to the ENS Lyon, France, to complete his MSc. He took his PhD in chemical biology in 2013 on imaging probes for hydrolases, under Prof. Jens Hasserodt at the ENS Lyon, France; postdoc'd in photopharmacology with Prof. Dirk Trauner at the LMU Munich; and started his independent career in chemical biology at the LMU in 2016. From 2018 he has been supported through the DFG Emmy Noether group leader program.
His research focuses on the function-oriented design of stimulus-responsive organic chemical reagents to study and control cell biology. Heteroatoms (O, N, S, Se), π-systems, and gating chemical responses, are often central to the group's projects.
