Guest Lecture: Prof. Dr. Erwin Kessels
The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1415 is pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Erwin Kessels from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, as a guest. Prof. Dr. Kessels’ scientific lecture, “Well, Mr. Feynman, there is no more plenty of room at the bottom: Atomic-scale Processing & 2D Materials for Future Chips,” focused on Feynman’s vision of “Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” which has shaped miniaturization in the semiconductor industry for decades. However, conventional scaling has now reached its limits.
Further progress requires atomic-level control of matter, enabled by techniques such as atomic layer deposition, atomic layer etching, and area-selective deposition. Applying these methods to 2D materials allows for the fabrication of ultrathin, complex structures that drive the development of next-generation logic and memory devices—thus realizing Feynman’s vision of future nanoscale chips.
We sincerely thank Prof. Dr. Erwin Kessels for his visit to Technische Universität Dresden!
