- 09:30 Arriving
- 10:00 Keynote lecture by Peer Haller:
Renewable materials in top form
Bamboo is botanically a grass. The raw material has an important position in construction in many parts of the world, such as South America or Asia, and in the production of objects of daily use. The lecture presents the geometrical, anatomical and mechanical properties of the material. Given the small dimensions in terms of length and diameter, as well as their natural dispersions, bamboo constructions have many connection points. Various connections are presented and built examples are shown.
Building with renewable raw materials is becoming increasingly important in the discussion on sustainable development. Wood is the most important renewable raw material worldwide and an integral part of construction worldwide. But what happens when sustainability is written globally with the same four letters W-O-O-D? The lecture shows alternatives in building with wood, which take bamboo as a model.
- 11:30 Architectural Math lecture #3 by Ahmed Elshafei
Negative constant Gaussian curvature (CGC) surfaces.
Bäcklund transformations (of vertical line, Pseudo-Sphere,…).
Principal and asymptotic Tchebyshef patches on negative CGC surfaces.
Correspondence between the Tchebyshef patches.

Beyond wood – structural and functional diversity in lignified tissues
Wood, i.e., secondary xylem derived from a bifacial cambium is widespread among plants. However, various types of lignified cells and tissues can be found and are often connected to specific functions, three examples of which will be presented. [Abstract]
