To mark the 65th birthday of Prof. Karl Leo, the Faculty of Physics hosted a celebratory colloquium on February 3, 2026. Even though the milestone birthday was some time ago, the faculty took the opportunity to honor Karl Leo's extraordinary scientific work with laudatory speeches and a keynote speech. As an internationally recognized pioneer of organic Semiconductors and OLED research, Prof. Leo has laid the foundations for numerous technological developments and played a key role in the successful transfer of cutting-edge research into industrial applications.
The opening address by Dean Prof. Gesche Pospiech was followed by a laudatory speech by Dr. Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth (beeOLED GmbH). The keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr. Malte Gather (University of Cologne & University of St Andrews) on the topic of "Organic Optoelectronics - From Curiosity to Multi-billion Dollar Industry and a Few Ideas for What's Next".
The event concluded with a reception with guests, colleagues and companions in the Recknagel Building.
