Harry-Dember-Prize
Call for Proposals
1. Objective
The Harry Dember Prize is intended to honor particularly outstanding master’s theses, diploma theses, or state examination theses at TU Dresden in the fields of optics, optoelectronics, photonics, and imaging scanning probe methods. The award is generally granted only to students who have completed their studies within the standard period of study for the respective subject. Justified exceptions are possible. The prize is intended to commemorate the Dresden physicist Prof. Harry Dember, the discoverer of the effect named after him. After many years of successful work in the Department of Physics at what was then the Technical University of Dresden, Dember was expelled by the Nazis in 1933 and emigrated to Turkey and subsequently to the United States, where he died in 1942.
2. Award
The award consists of a certificate and prize money in the amount of 1,000 euros.
3. Award Ceremony
Nominations for the award for the respective calendar year must be submitted by university faculty members or other individuals active in the subject areas mentioned in point 1 to the Executive Director of the Center for Applied Photonics by January 31 of the following year. Self-nominations are not permitted. An eligible nomination must include the thesis and a detailed justification of the nominee’s merit by the nominator. The jury (consisting of the Executive Board of the Center for Applied Photonics) selects one thesis from the nominations received; the prize may be shared. The award ceremony takes place during a festive colloquium at the beginning of the following year.
