The Chair for Solid State Physics continues to address the fabrication and the investigation of multifunctional magnetic heterostructures and devices. We use magneto-transport and spin-caloritronic measurements, as well as spin dynamics (magnetic resonance) experiments, to understand the properties of thin films with complex magnetic structures or interesting topological features.
Important Research Foci
In some more detail, we investigate spin-dependent transport (anisotropic magnetoresistance, anomalous Hall effect, topological Hall effect) as well as pure spin currents (spin Hall magnetoresistance, spin Seebeck effect, spin Nernst effect, spin pumping, etc.) in solids. Magnetic systems with non-trivial spin texture, e.g. caused by canted magnetic sublattices, magnetic frustration effects, or topological magnetic structures such as skyrmions, currently are of particular interest for these experiments.
Complementarily, we study pure magnon currents in nanostructures of metals and magnetic insulators. These experiments enable the determination of magnon scattering lengths and allow realizing novel magnetic logic components.
As a second major focus, the group investigates the thermodynamic properties of bulk magnetic materials (magnetostriction, magnetization, susceptibility). The focus is on the magnetoelastic behavior of compounds with 3d or rare earth elements. These investigations shed light on the influence of lattice distortions on the electronic properties. Recent work again deals with frustrated spin systems and topological effects. The measurements take place up to highest magnetic fields (100 T pulsed) or very low temperatures (10 mK).
