In-Operando X-Ray Powder Diffraction for Better Batteries

We are excited to announce that, following the development and optimization of our dedicated in-operando X-ray diffraction setup, we have now begun exploring structural processes in working Li-ion batteries.

Equipped with four DECTRIS detectors and a silver X-ray source (λ = 0.559 Å), the setup enables a wide angular range to be recorded in a single snapshot. This configuration provides high counting efficiency, allowing a time resolution on the order of minutes. In this way, we were able to collect numerous snapshots of the battery throughout a full charge–discharge cycle of approximately 9 hours. The figure shows the structural changes occurring during this cycle (signaled by the appearance of lines with increasing scan number).

Such investigations are essential for understanding the microscopic mechanisms of lithium diffusion, which in turn supports the development of more efficient cathode materials — an ongoing effort carried out in collaboration with IFW Dresden and Heidelberg University.
