This project will investigate electronic states in metallic or weakly insulating systems using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, with the goal of deducing low-energy band structures and Fermi surfaces. Information on magnetic phenomena can be extracted from (i) exchange splittings and backfolding of bands due to antiferromagnetic superstructures, from (ii) the spin polarization of states, from (iiI) kink features close to the Fermi energy caused by spin excitations and from (iv) a line-shape
analysis. In the context of frustrated metals, flat or almost flat bands are of particular interest. Special attention will be paid to surface-related phenomena like unusual surface electron states in topological insulators and Weyl semimetals.
