Using synchrotron-based x-ray techniques, this project will measure the static and dynamic properties of spins, charges, and orbitals as well as their coupling to the lattice in frustrated materials. We will employ x-ray absorption and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to examine the local electronic structure and the active electronic degrees of freedom. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering will be used to study competing electronically ordered phases. Finally, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering will be employed for an element-specific study of collective and local electronic excitations, local spin correlations in spin liquids and characteristic time scales of spin fluctuations.
