What is a “gap-filling” program?
The “gap-filling” program is a special form of academic continuing education for teachers entering the profession from other fields. It is an option if you are only missing a few course requirements to complete your subject certification. Instead of a part-time professional qualification (BQL), you can complete individual modules in a targeted manner from the regular teacher education program—alongside regular students and with a certificate upon completion.
Prerequisites
To enroll in the “gap-filling” continuing education program at TUD, you need the recognition notice from LaSuB (title of the notice: “Catching up on missing coursework and course requirements in accordance with § 7(5) QualiVO for teachers”). You will receive this once you have applied for recognition from LaSuB and your application has been reviewed.
Registration
As soon as you have received your letter of recognition from LaSuB, you can register by email with the TUD Center for Continuing Education. Attach the letter of recognition as a scan or photo, and provide your full name and contact information.

- For the winter semester: August–September
- For the summer semester: February – March
After you register, you’ll receive all further information and next steps via email—summarized briefly below:
- You’ll schedule a counseling session with the academic advising office to discuss module selection. During this session, they’ll determine which modules from the regular teacher education program you’re eligible to take.
- Once the modules have been determined and communicated to the TUD Center for Continuing Education, your personalized continuing education program will be created for you.
- If you accept the offer, you will then receive an invoice for the continuing education fee.
- Begin your continuing education to fill in the gaps.
Continuing Education Fees:
The costs are determined on an individual basis and depend on:
- the type, number, and scope of the modules
- Duration of the training program (number of semesters)
You will receive an invoice for the continuing education fees after accepting the offer. Financial aid options can be explored if applicable.
It is possible to extend the program by one or more semesters. In that case, you will pay an additional 40.00 EUR per semester on top of the tuition fees already paid. Please contact us well in advance of the end of your final semester if you wish to extend your program.
For New Participants
Digital onboarding for all new program participants will take place here on September 11, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You are welcome to sign up for an email reminder.
There will also be an open digital office hour here on October 8, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Procedure
You will complete modules from the regular teacher education program. The courses (including lectures, seminars, and exercises) for these modules will be held together with the students, as will the exams.
Course content, examination formats, credit hours, and further information regarding the modules and exams are governed by the study and examination regulations.

The modules you complete as part of the bridging program may be spread over several semesters.
Certificate
Upon successful completion of your modules, you will receive a TUD certificate from the Center for Continuing Education. The certificate lists all exams, including the module number, module name, type of exam, exam date, grade, and credit points.

Information and documents for the courses are provided on the teaching and learning platform OPAL. After registering for the course, you will receive a guest login and can register for the individual courses in OPAL. In addition to the documents and any video recordings, organizational information such as room, time and last-minute cancellations can also be found here.
You will take one or more examinations for each module. Possible options include a written examination, term paper, portfolio or oral examination. The forms of examination for a module can be found in the module description in the respective study regulations. The examination regulations can be found in the respective examination regulations.
