Admission requirements

- First university degree in hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, environmental or agricultural engineering, geosciences, environmental sciences, geography, geology or comparable subject areas
- English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages are required. Proof is provided by means of a relevant certificate or language certificate. In particular, this can be a certificate of a university degree completed entirely in English or a language certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS

Students will be provided with the knowledge, skills and competencies to address the challenges of assessing and managing groundwater resources for freshwater conservation and supply under increasing pressure from human activities and climate change.
As the largest liquid freshwater reservoir on earth, groundwater has both enormous environmental and economic value and will be an essential resource for adapting to climate change and reducing socio-economic vulnerability, particularly in regions where freshwater availability is highly variable and often limited.
The course is concerned with understanding the complex interactions between groundwater, surface water, climate and global change and how we should take these into account and use them to implement adaptation solutions.

Study contents

The international English-language Master's degree program focuses on the following six subject areas: Hydrological Flow Systems, Groundwater Quality and Pollution, Groundwater and Climate, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Sustainable Development, Water Infrastructure and Monitoring, Data and Modeling. The course also includes practice-oriented case studies and current topics from basic and application-oriented research. The course also includes a combination of theoretical and methodical-practical principles in connection with groundwater hydrology and its interactions with climate and human activities.
The course has a modular structure. The courses are spread over three semesters. The fourth semester is reserved for the final thesis and the colloquium. The final thesis can be completed at one of the three cooperation partners of the student's choice.
Two semesters of coursework and examinations, each worth 30 credit points, must be completed as part of the cooperation with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and Instituto Superior Técnico Universidade de Lisboa in accordance with the cooperation agreement.

The course has a modular structure and comprises 4 semesters, in each of which coursework and examinations amounting to 30 credit points must be completed. In accordance with the cooperation with the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and the Instituto Superior Técnico Universidade de Lisboa, the course of study is as follows:
- 1st semester at the University of Lisbon
- 2nd semester at the IHE in Delft
- 3rd semester at the TU Dresden
- 4th semester Master's thesis and colloquium at one of the three cooperation partners of the student's choice

At TU Dresden, the course comprises three compulsory modules and one or two compulsory elective modules worth 10 credit points, which allow students to choose their own specialization. In particular, the subjects Hydrosciences Aquatic Ecology and Ecotoxicology, Communication and Management Numerical Methods for Hydrosciences, Hydrodynamics as well as Ecology and Applied Statistics are available.

Die Absolventinnen und Absolventen sind durch breites fachliches Wissen und die Beherrschung aktueller Konzepte und wissenschaftlicher Methoden dazu befähigt, in der Berufspraxis vielfältige und komplexe Aufgabenstellungen im Fachbereich der Grundwasserhydrologie, des Klimawandels und der Forschung zu bewältigen, beispielsweise in Wassermanagement- und Naturschutzorganisationen, Regierungsbehörden, gemeinnützigen Or-ganisationen, privaten Beratungsunternehmen, wissenschaftlichen Forschungseinrichtungen und freiberuflichen Tätigkeiten im In- und Ausland. Sie sind in der Lage, effektiv mit interdisziplinären und internationalen Teams zusammenzuarbeiten. Die Absolventinnen und Absolventen sind dar-über hinaus befähigt, als unabhängige Fachpersonen zu arbeiten, die sich mit dem Grundwasser im Rahmen der Anpassung an das Klima und den globalen Wandel beschäftigen.
