Due to their resource consumption, laboratories are among the university facilities that have a profound impact on our environment. Who knew that on average, a -80°C freezer requires the same amount of energy as a single-family home? Or that 5.5 million tons of plastic waste were generated in laboratories worldwide in 2014 alone? What is the impact of laboratory work and, first and foremost, where are particularly large amounts of resources consumed?
Green Lab TUD Program
In view of the increasing requirements of research funding institutions, such as the DFG or Volkswagen Foundation, which address sustainability measures in the laboratory as a condition for funding, it is important that working groups at TU Dresden can obtain proof in the future that they are making their laboratory work more sustainable, e.g by reducing their carbon footprint. Since TU Dresden already has an externally validated environmental management system, it makes sense to integrate a Green Lab standard into the EMAS environmental management system. For this purpose we offer the Green Lab TUD Program as a voluntary programm for TUD´s research groups.
Registration/Participation
Working groups can register for the Green Lab TUD Program via an online form.

The information requested in the online form will be evaluated by the Environmental Coordinator. After sending a detailed checklist for an initial self-assessment, an internal audit with an on-site visit will be carried out, including an introduction to the Green Lab Program and a joint in-depth analysis. Recommendations for action for the working group are derived from these observations and an implementation plan is defined. This procedure ensures that the Green Lab TUD Program is part of the EMAS environmental management system.
Applications can be submitted on an ongoing basis. If we receive more inquiries than we can process, we will inform you and try to schedule them according to the available capacities.
