Due to their resource consumption, laboratories are among the university facilities that have a profound impact on our environment. Who knew that on average, a -80°C freezer requires the same amount of energy as a single-family home? Or that 5.5 million tons of plastic waste were generated in laboratories worldwide in 2014 alone? What is the impact of laboratory work and, first and foremost, where are particularly large amounts of resources consumed?

IGEM Goes Green 2017
As part of the iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine competition) in 2017, a team of students from the Faculty of Biology at TU Dresden created the iGEM Goes Green initiative. Alongside their research work, the students wanted to be mindful of environmental factors in the lab and published a Green Lab Guide for all iGEM teams.

Sustainability initiative at CMCB
Since 2019, the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering has had its own sustainability initiative, which now boasts around 10 employees from BIOTEC, CRTD and B CUBE. Initial measures to reduce waste and save energy have already been initiated, and campaigns have been carried out to motivate employees at the institutions to take action themselves.
Green Lab Guide for TU Dresden project
These initiatives have resulted in the idea to create a guide for labs at TU Dresden. They are looking for researchers who would be interested in helping create a Green Lab Guide.

Kick off – First workshop of 2022 “Green Lab – Sustainable Laboratory,” as part of the 2022 sustainability week at TU Dresden
In her keynote speech, Dr. Kerstin Hermuth-Kleinschmidt (NIUB Nachhaltige Unternehmensberatung – Sustainability for Life Sciences) addressed environmental aspects of labs and introduced initial measures. Following this, Anne Eugster, Research Associate at CRTD and member of the Sustainability Initiative at CMCB, introduced the initiative and their activities. Afterwards, there was ample time for questions and discussion.
