The political culture in Saxony is becoming increasingly confrontational and harsh. Populist and in some cases far-right attitudes are becoming ever more openly opposed to democratic values. When it comes to global crisis issues such as wars, climate change, migration and distributive justice, the fronts are hardening in terms of interpretation. These developments make dialog and the negotiation of change processes towards a more sustainable society more difficult.
In this area of tension, education for sustainable development (ESD) faces particular challenges as an approach to implementing the United Nations' global sustainability goals (Agenda 2030). The question arises: How can global (crisis) topics be conveyed in educational and teaching events in such a way that they do not discourage and divide, but rather take up the participants' lifeworld, strengthen their ability to reflect and discuss and motivate them to participate? What practical and methodological approaches help to deal constructively with polarizing issues and promote an open dialogue about a sustainable future?
