As part of the MENSCHENanSCHAUN exhibition, which will be on display at the Stadtmuseum Dresden until July 7, 2024 (https://www.stmd.de/menschenschau), a public panel discussion with international speakers will be held on June 17, 2024 at 7:00 pm on the topic of “Remembering Colonial History: Regional, European, Global”.

Academics and museum experts from Germany, France and Benin will discuss the contemporary relevance of colonial history with regard to public remembrance. What role does colonial history play in contemporary cultures of remembrance, and what role should it actually play? To what extent is remembering this history relevant today? Which aspects of history are of particular interest? What forms of exhibiting and showcasing are appropriate? What are the tasks of historiography and public institutions in this context?  
In answering these questions, the panelists will combine regional and local perspectives with European and non-European ones. 

Guests: Prof. Dr. Nicolas Bancel (Historian, France / University of Lausanne, Switzerland), Dr. Sandrine Lemaire (Historian, France, Classes préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles au lycée Jean Jaurès à Reims), Prof. Dr. Didier Houénoudé (Historian, Benin, University of Cotonou) and Dr. Christina Ludwig (Cultural Scientist, Germany, Director Stadtmuseum Dresden [Dresden City Museum]).
