New Research Group Leader came from Harvard to Dresden
The unique career development program of the cluster of
excellence Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) is
convincing: One of the new research talents came from the
prestigious university of Harvard at the American East Coast to
the Technische Universität (TU) Dresden.
Dr. Thorsten-Lars Schmidt works as a research group leader in the “Biomolecular-Assembled Circuits“(BAC) path since August. The 34-year-old chemist is a specialist for biologically-inspired self-assembly of deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA). His research area will be the use of these DNA structures in the bottom-up fabrication of basic nano- and microscopic opto-electronic components. During the past three years, he worked at the Harvard Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Boston (USA). „Dresden as a special hub of microelectronics is an excellent research environment“, says Dr. Schmidt. He declined another job offer from a University in Denmark, because of a dual science career offer for his spouse in Dresden. Furthermore, in the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden, he has the perspective to apply for a professorship after successful evaluation of his work.
Since November 2012, seven scientists have been recruited as
postdocs or group leaders and about 60 for a PhD position. The
new Research Group Leaders will receive an intensive mentorship
by outstanding international scientists, the others will take
part in a systematic personal career development program.
The career development is a core element of the cfaed. The
first “Grand Professors” will begin to accompany the young
talents soon. Furthermore, there will be a close cooperation
with the new Graduate Academy of the TU Dresden recently
established by DRESDEN concept.
On 18 September, the cfaed invites its staff to the
presentation of its “Career Development Program“. The event
will take place at 2 pm in Lecture Theatre 023 of the Computer
Science Faculty, Nöthnitzer Straße 46.
