Continual Growth in the Alliance: 28 Partners in DRESDEN-concept
It became official on 1st August 2018 – the Barkhausen Institute has become the 28th partner in the DRESDEN-concept research alliance. The institute, which was only established this year, is concerned with improving technology for the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is a vision of global infrastructure that will enable physical and virtual objects to be wirelessly connected with each other.
„Dresden has established itself as the main location for the semiconductor industry in Europe, counting on a lively and well-coordinated ecosystem of industry, startups, research institutes and academia, with proven excellence in several research areas, which are key for the wireless communications industry and the Internet of Things,“ is stated on the Barkhausen Institute website. The institute uses this location to its advantage and gets involved in fields of application such as mechanical engineering, traffic, health and telecommunications. Saxony is being equipped for the digital future thanks to research at the Barkhausen Institute.
The institute, which is headed by Prof. Gerhard Fettweis, is already working closely with TU Dresden and the Vodafone Chair for Mobile Communications Systems of TU Dresden, and is part of the Saxon "Smart Systems Hub". Through DRESDEN-concept, the institute also gains access to other important institutes concerned with the Internet of Things, such as the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics.
In May, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – Institute of Software Methods for Product Virtualization, as well as two Fraunhofer institutes were welcomed as new partners in the DRESDEN-concept network. "We are pleased with the constant growth of the research alliance, as this shows that Dresden's science hub is growing closer together and that the DRESDEN-concept model provides the individual partners with the tools to collaborate between institutions," says Professor Ludwig Schultz, scientific coordinator of DRESDEN-concept.
What is DRESDEN-concept?
DRESDEN-concept is an alliance of 28 partners from the world of science and culture. Their cooperation aims to utilise synergies in research, teaching, infrastructure, administration, and knowledge transfer. Members coordinate their scientific strategies and identify areas in which Dresden is a global leader. Partners work together to attract world-leading scientists to Dresden and retain them at the Dresden science hub. DRESDEN is an acronym that stands for Dresden Research and Education Synergies for the Development of Excellence and Novelty.
