The DRESDEN-concept alliance now boasts 27 partners
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) – Institute of Software Methods for Product Virtualization is the newest partner institution in the DRESDEN-concept research alliance. The DLR institute joins the ranks of the Helmholtz institutions within the research alliance (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases). The DLR institute, which recently opened in Dresden in August 2017, is dedicated to virtualization in the field of aircraft construction.
Before an aircraft can successfully take off, it is necessary to carry out numerous expensive development processes and lengthy tests. Using a virtual aircraft, which behaves exactly like a real aircraft, these processes can be effectuated, not only faster and cheaper, but also safer. In the future, the DLR institute will address the challenges posed by the entire process chain, from the initial digital design right through to the simulated decommissioning of the airplane. In co-operation with TU Dresden’s Faculty of Computer Science and the Lehmann Centre, first research projects are already underway. A call for applications for a jointly appointed professorship (TU Dresden and DLR) has also been published. Jointly appointed professors teach at the university while also heading an extramural institution: in this case the DLR Institute of Software Methods for Product Virtualization.
At the opening of the DLR institute in the summer of 2017, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, DRESDEN-concept’s chairman of the board and Rector of TU Dresden, stated: “Setting up the DLR software institute on our campus is a success and enrichment not only for TU Dresden but also for the city of Dresden and the Free State of Saxony. The DLR institute is a top-class addition to the portfolio of extramural research institutions in Dresden and I will strive to ensure that it becomes a member of our DRESDEN-concept research alliance as soon as possible.”
This long-standing wish has been fulfilled with the institute’s admission to the research alliance.
