Online-calendar for seminar announcements cross-links scientific community of Dresden
With the creation of the Dresden Science Calendar at http://science.dresden.de, all scientific events in the area of Dresden will be made visible at a glance from this day forward. This calendar, developed in cooperation with the city of Dresden and Sandstein Neue Medien GmbH, allows the international scientists within the framework of the DRESDEN-concept to improve cooperation across departmental limits and produce more efficient science.
Dresden is an attractive place for interdisciplinary science with many activities and projects that connect the TU Dresden, the institutes of the Max Planck and the Fraunhofer Society, and the institutes of the Leibniz and the Helmholtz Association. Scientific events are the vital link, ranging from single talks of international guests to larger conferences. Generally, they are organized by a single institute or academic facility and offer the opportunity for staff from other institutes to get an up to date view of the organizing institutions science and provide a forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas. Within the scientific framework of the DRESDEN-concept, and in cooperation with the city of Dresden and Sandstein Neue Medien GmbH, a customized Internet platform for the exchange of information on scientific events has been developed over the last months, the Dresden Science Calendar. Anyone, including those of the public who are interested in science, can retrieve the relevant seminar announcements. The platform provides a range of services, including the ability to set criteria and personal interests as well as to sign up for regular notifications of events that meet these criteria via RSS-feed, iCal-subscription or other communication channels. The Dresden Science Calendar complements the announcement systems of the individual institutes, from which most of the primary information is automatically synchronized.
The core of this platform is an online calendar that is part of the web site of the city of Dresden. Further scientific activities, such as the ‘Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften’ will also become part of the platform in the future. The Dresden Science Calendar is run and developed by a working group of young scientists of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, the Center for Information Technology Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) of the TU Dresden, the Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus, the Media Centre, and the department of Research Promotion and Public Relations of the TU Dresden, as well as the IT experts of Sandstein Neue Medien GmbH.
