Rector of TU Dresden Awarded Honorary Doctorate by University of Shiraz

Vlnr: Prof Nadgaran, President of SU; Prof. Müller-Steinhagen; Mr. Rahmani, Governor Fars Province
The Rector of Technische Universität Dresden, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Shiraz on 2nd December 2018. This makes Prof. Müller-Steinhagen one of only two people to receive an honorary doctorate from this Iranian university in the past 40 years. He was recognised for his global academic reputation and for his commitment to advancing an international approach to science. This is particularly visible in the expansion of TU Dresden's cooperation with the University of Shiraz.
Prof. Müller-Steinhagen has been partnering with scientists from Iranian universities since 1993. He has been a visiting professor in Iran since 1996 and has supervised a total of 16 Iranian doctoral students. One of his first doctoral students, M. Reza Malayeri, even became a professor at the University of Shiraz and is now responsible for cooperation with TU Dresden.
The honorary doctorate award ceremony coincided with a visit by scientists from TU Dresden to the University of Shiraz.
There are many parallels between TU Dresden and the University of Shiraz: The university in Shiraz enjoys a strong reputation comparable to that of TU Dresden, and professors from both universities are involved in successful and innovative projects.
Following the Iran nuclear deal in 2015 and the lifting of economic sanctions in 2016, TU Dresden was one of the first German universities to expand its cooperation with Iran, and it continues to do so today. The DFG, BMBF, DAAD and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation also made invaluable contributions. As early as 2014, the DAAD was the first education agency in the world to open its own office in Iran, and the DFG is linked to its Iranian counterpart by a memorandum of understanding.
This is already the third honorary doctorate for Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Brno, Czech Republic, in October 2012 and by Dankook University, South Korea, in 2015.
