TU Dresden's statement on cosmopolitanism, civil liberties and a stable democracy
TUD Dresden University of Technology assumes societal responsibility and is firmly committed to a stable democracy and its inseparable values of respect, diversity and cosmopolitanism. It also warns against anti-constitutional and anti-Semitic tendencies that seek to undermine the free and democratic fundamental principles and universal human rights through misanthropic thought and action.
TUD expressly endorses the Statement of the German Rectors' Conference "Science needs liberal democracy and the rule of law" and is also sending another signal for freedom, tolerance and a welcoming culture by supporting the nationwide media campaign „#Zusammenland – Vielfalt macht uns stark“ (#Togetherland - Diversity makes us strong)”.
The statement "TUD Dresden University of Technology for a strong democracy and a cosmopolitan society" in full:
“We are deeply concerned to see how anti-constitutional, especially right-wing extremist forces are threatening our democracy with inhumane, nationalistic thinking and how people are being intimidated and marginalized.
It falls to all of us – and to science as an important pillar of society – to take a firm stand against this. As a university, we are committed to upholding political neutrality. However, neutrality does not entail silence when the fundamental values of our basic democratic order, such as civil liberties, human dignity, and the rule of law, are threatened.
As an internationally oriented university, we stand for respect, diversity and cosmopolitanism. As the largest employer in Dresden, we bear societal responsibility and have a duty to protect our almost 40,000 employees and students from over 120 countries from discrimination and exclusion.
We oppose hatred, hate speech and violence, racism and antisemitism, and stand up for a society in which the fundamental rights and dignity of every individual are respected. The many people who have stood up to the right-wing extremist threat at numerous demonstrations throughout Germany in recent weeks have made a clear commitment and sent an encouraging signal. We emphatically support this active stand for the protection of our democracy.
"Each and every member of our universities is called upon to stand up for the fundamental values of our constitution." We fully endorse this unambiguous statement by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).
Never again is now!“
