Excellence in Research and Teaching: TU Dresden ranks highly in STEM subjects in the CHE university ranking
TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) offers an impressive range of STEM courses and is among the top universities in Germany in several categories in the latest university ranking by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) for the subjects "Biology/Life Sciences", "Chemistry", "Mathematics", "Physics", and "Medicine". TUD scored particularly well with regard to the study situation as well as the organization of studies, the introduction to studies as well as the IT and library facilities. Altogether, this contributes to a high level of satisfaction among students.
"We are delighted that we, as a university of technology, have been rated so highly by our students, especially in the STEM disciplines, and that we can position ourselves in the top field," says Prof. Michael Kobel, Vice-Rector Academic Affairs at TUD. "The study conditions and support at the start of studies are particularly important to us and we are very pleased that we are ranked among the best in several disciplines and subject areas," said the Vice-Rector. "The results also show that students also benefit from our strengths in research as a University of Excellence. We are supporting student research projects with our FOSTER Program. We are also developing highly interdisciplinary and international degree programs from Clusters of Excellence such as "Physics of Life“.
More than 300 universities, universities of applied sciences, universities of cooperative education and vocational academies in German-speaking countries were assessed for the most recent CHE ranking results. The results were published on the online platform www.heystudium.de on May 2, 2024 and will be published in the ZEIT Study Guide 2023/24 on May 4, 2024.
Each year, around a third of the disciplines is re-evaluated for the ranking. This year, TUD presented detailed evaluations from the student survey for the disciplines biology / life sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, medicine, physics, political science / social sciences and sociology / social sciences.
Students in biology/life sciences, chemistry, mathematics, medicine and physics gave very good grades for the organization of their studies and the library facilities and also highlighted the teaching of knowledge and methods of scientific work at the start of their studies and the wide range of courses on offer. The laboratory equipment and facilities for biology/life sciences and chemistry also received very good grades. Biology/live sciences and chemistry were also rated especially well in terms of teaching scientific and interdisciplinary skills. Furthermore, physics scored highly in terms of the support they have provided for students “studying abroad”.
Computer Science also received top grades for library facilities and was ranked highly for study organization, IT and room facilities. Political science/social sciences and sociology/social sciences also received very good ratings for library facilities, the condition of teaching rooms and support for study abroad programs.
National results confirm international STEM strength
The very good results for TUD's STEM subjects in the current CHE ranking are in line with the results also published this year in the international "2024 QS World University Rankings" for "Engineering & Technology", "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" and "Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering". TUD has succeeded in maintaining its position in the TOP 100 internationally and is among the TOP 10 nationwide. In addition, there is the field of "Natural Sciences", which is also among the top 10 nationwide.
