This week the 5G Lab Germany at TU Dresden was recognized during ground breaking presentations on national and international level by its two coordinators Prof. Frank Fitzek and Prof. Gerhard Fettweis.

Professor Frank Fitzek, coordinator of 5G Lab Germany at TU Dresden, was invited to present the vision and importance of 5G technology at the 9th German National IT Summit (IT-Gipfel) in Berlin. In a central common showcase with Ericsson he explained the current status of research and visualized the variety of possible applications, closely followed by Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel, vice chancellor Siegmar Gabriel and five federal ministers. The exhibits demonstrated different 5G use cases covering Industry 4.0, healthcare, smart energy grids, and mobility. For mobility a live demo showing the difference between autonomous and connected driving has been set up. It visualized the advantages of connected cars over autonomous ones. The presentation was also a good chance to discuss the political environment that has to be created to keep Germany a leading nation in mobile communications technology.

But not only Berlin was in focus of action. The second coordinator of 5G Lab Germany Prof. Gerhard Fettweis was one of the five keynote speakers at the 5G Silicon Valley Summit 2015 which took place on Monday 16th November 2015 at Santa Clara University in California, USA. His keynote was titled “5G Technology - Breaking Grounds from Thingbook to the Tactile Internet”.

The leading association of electrical and electronics engineers IEEE holds a series of high impact one day Summits in emerging technology areas. The upcoming Silicon Valley 5G Summit was the second one in the series, it provided a platform for industry leaders, innovators, and researchers from the industry and academic community to collaborate and exchange ideas that may help in driving the standards and rapid deployment.

5G Lab Germany
The 5G Lab Germany at TU Dresden is an interdisciplinary team with more than 500 researchers from 20 different research areas of TUD. It aims to deliver key technologies for enabling 5G. The research is divided in four different tracks: Wireless & Networks, Tactile Internet Applications, Silicon Systems, and Mobile Edge Cloud. There are more than 50 connected partners, including Vodafone, National Instruments, Nokia, Rohde&Schwarz, Alcatel-Lucent, NEC, Claas and Ericsson. The Cluster of Excellence “Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden" particularly supports the 5G Lab with its three systems-oriented research paths - Orchestration, Resilience, and Highly-Adaptive Energy-Efficient Computing (HAEC).

National IT Summit Germany
The 9th National IT Summit 2015 was held on 18th / 19th November in Berlin with 1,100 high-level participants. The Summit is the central platform for the cooperation of politics, business, science and society in designing the digital transformation. The Digital Agenda which was concluded in August 2014 by the Federal Cabinet sets Guidelines for the shape of this change. This Agenda is to be implemented and further developed in cooperation with the manufacturers and users of IT, science and the social partners and social groups. The IT Summit and its intra-year working structure has been aligned to the fields of action listed in the Digital Agenda.
