Researching at the Beating Heart of Society
TU Dresden Sets up Interdisciplinary Center for Demography and Diversity
Society is growing increasingly diverse, and ideas of how to achieve a successful co-existence of generations and social groups are becoming more disparate – which is why society also needs answers from science. The Center for Demography and Diversity (CDD), which will open on 13 June as a TU Dresden centre of competence, provides a platform for scientists of all disciplines to work in the multi-faceted field of social diversity. Members of all five TU Dresden Schools participate in the CDD. The members explore causes and consequences of demographic change and of increasing levels of diversity, and use their findings to develop measures that will be of practical use. Basic research and applied research are closely linked. The CDD is intended to be a forum for research, for providing advice, for professional training and continuing education as well as for knowledge transfer into social institutions.
The members of the CDD will develop projects in five fields of action: working and living, education, living environment and infrastructure, human-machine interaction and also nursing care and support. The fields of action reflect the interdisciplinary approach of the CDD, as different CDD participants will be connected through each topic.
A series of events – the “Demography Salon” – is intended to promote the exchange of ideas between practice and science in order to boost research. An initial demography salon focussing on migration is planned for 7 November 2016. In addition, the CDD will be sending several speakers to the “Saxon Data Salon”, an event which will take place on 6 October 2016.
The thematic and organisational co-ordination relating to the founding of the CDD has been undertaken by the Centre for Synergy Enhancement (ZSE). The ZSE is an integral part of the Institutional Strategy and serves as TUD’s “synergy engine”.
All scientists from Dresden who are interested in attending are cordially invited to the inaugural event, which will take place on 13 June at 4.30 p.m. in the banquet hall of the Rectorate.
