Artificial Intelligence in the bathroom: Researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering contribute to the ARD theme day
Scientists from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at TU Dresden are demonstrating the future of home care as part of the ARD theme day "Medicine of Tomorrow". As part of the ERDF project "Domestic Health Station", state-of-the-art contactless medical technology with artificial intelligence developed at the Institute was integrated into the bathroom of a model apartment in order to extract vital data such as heart or respiratory rate. Siegfried Wien, a resident of the model apartment, demonstrates the technology and explains its significance for his everyday life. The underlying process is called camera-based photoplethysmography and is based on the fact that the perfusion in the blood vessels of the uppermost layers of the skin changes with every ejection of blood from the heart and this can be recorded on the face using cameras. Particular attention was paid in the project to user-friendliness and ease of use in order to achieve a high level of acceptance among end users. The full-length report is available in the ARD media library.
Interested in trying out this technology for yourself? From 1.10.24 to 28.02.25, the mirror will be presented as an exhibit in the COSMO Science Forum of innovative medical technology research projects from Dresden. The exhibition will be open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1pm to 6pm and is free of charge. Further information will be available here from the summer.
