TUD awards medal and six 2020 honorary pins

TU Dresden is celebrating members of the university who have rendered outstanding services or exceptional personal achievements to the university. Prof. Stefan Bornstein was awarded an honorary medal and Alexander Busch, Prof. Manfred Curbach, Prof. Horst-Peter Götting, Prof. Ellen Hieckmann, Prof. Michael Kobel and Prof. Kai Simons all received an honorary pin.
Prof. Stefan R. Bornstein received TUD’s honorary medal. As Dean and founder of transCampus, a unique strategic partnership with Kings College London, Prof. Bornstein has forged new paths for the internationalization of TUD. transCampus was crucial to the success of TUD’s Excellence Initiative application during the final rounds. As Director of the Medical Clinic and Policlinic III, Prof. Bornstein is regarded as one of the most proactive medical research doctors.
Alexander Busch did outstanding work not only for students but also for the university as a whole. He was instrumental in the founding of the group “WHAT– wissen, handeln und aktiv teilnehmen” (know, act and actively participate), which raises awareness of socio-political issues and campaigns against racism and xenophobia.
Prof. Manfred Curbach has done pioneering work in the area of textile-reinforced and more specifically carbon-reinforced concrete. He served with distinction as Vice-Rector for University Development for one term. Prof. Curbach exemplifies interdisciplinarity, internationality and successful technology transfer in equal measure.
As former Dean of the Faculty of Law at TUD, Prof. Horst-Peter Götting played an active role in shaping the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and promoted the development of consensus-based decision-making and workflows. In addition, He masterfully managed the integration of the Faculty of Law into the Faculty of.
Prof. Ellen Hieckmann has been active on various TUD self-administration committees for many years and is an elected member of the Senate. She is the Equal Opportunities Officer for the Faculty of Physics and School of Science.
Prof. Michael Kobel combines academic and social activism. He demonstrates that research is dependent on a free and democratic society and is inconceivable without social responsibility. He is outstandingly committed to making research findings accessible to all and to bolstering confidence in science and democracy.
Prof. Kai Simons is one of the founders of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG). He was its first Managing Director and has had an impact far beyond the Institute as a tireless driving force for biosciences and biotechnologies at the Dresden site. He played a decisive role in the establishment of Dresden as a global hub for biotechnology and made life sciences one of the integral pillars of TUD’s Excellence Strategy.
