"Become a teacher – but with a difference": »At work with...« Learning facilitator Pia Heyne
"In order to teach at the University School, you have to cast off the role of teacher. We want to focus on the pupils," Pia Heyne explains. She is a learning facilitator at University School Dresden and guides us through her everyday school life in the new episode of "At work with...". In comparison to teachers at other schools, Pia's work has many special characteristics: Free learning times in learning studios, project work in teams, interdisciplinary lessons.
How did Pia end up at the University School? And what does she find most exciting about her role as a learning facilitator? In the new video, Pia reveals what makes her work unique: Creating new learning modules, sitting in and mentoring. "I remain convinced that I can't reach all pupils with “chalk and talk” teaching." Pia explains how she supports pupils in achieving their learning goals independently and in following their own research interests. Pupils' everyday life is divided into phases of what are called learning studios and phases during which they work on projects in groups. In this way, the basic skills acquired in the studio with the help of learning modules flow into answering research questions that the pupils themselves have come up with.
Grades are awarded by the learning facilitators on a process-oriented basis: For example, Pia recognizes whether a pupil is familiar with stylistic devices and can interpret a text "quite naturally, during the process, for example in the form of an oral question." This allows skills to be tested in a stress-free manner, without having to create an exam situation every time. This is also how Pia envisions the school of the future: "I want children to have the opportunity to engage in self-determined learning. I would like for the process to be more visible." In the new video, Pia shows more of her action-packed working day at the University School.
