Renowned philosophers and political scientists visit TU Dresden: Philip Pettit and Rainer Forst talk about structural power relations
Can individuals be ruled only by specific other people, or can they also by ruled by structures? Can we only be dominated by our supervisors, racist neighbors, or capricious husbands, or also, for example, by algorithmic systems, the EU bureaucracy, or sexist and racist structures?
These are the issues that the “Structural Domination” conference will address, which will be held on September 18 and 19 at TU Dresden. Organized by the Chair of Practical Philosophy at TU Dresden, namely by Professor Tamara Jugov and her team members Dr. Lisa Hecht and Konstanze Möller-Jansen, various international researchers will share ideas on panels and in lectures on different aspects of structural oppressions, inequalities and dependencies against the background of neo-republican theories of freedom as non-domination.
A special highlight of the conference will be the public guest lectures by philosophers Philip Pettit and Rainer Forst:
Philip Pettit is Professor of Politics and Human Values at Princeton University and one of the most prominent contemporary philosophers and political scientists. He has been instrumental in founding and shaping the debate on neo-republican theories of freedom as non-domination. Moreover, he is conducting research on state theory, collective action, and moral philosophy. On September 18, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., he will speak on “Structural and Agential Domination.”
Rainer Forst is Professor of Political Theory and Philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He is a Leibniz Prize laureate and the most well-known representative of the third generation of the “Frankfurt School.” He explores issues of justice, trust and normativity and is director of the research center “Normative Orders.” His lecture “The Noumenal-Structural Power of Trust. A Critique of Ideologies of the Invisible” will take place on September 19, 2023 at 4:45 pm.
Both lectures will be given in English and will take place at the Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden (IHD), Zellescher Weg 24. Everyone is cordially invited to join this fascinating event! We look forward to seeing you there! More information: https://tu-dresden.de/gsw/phil/iphil/prak/die-professur/termine/internationale-konferenz-structural-domination-1
