Open Monument Day 2026: Explorations of the Beyer Building & Walks Across the TUD Campus | September 13, 2026, starting at 10 a.m.

In 1913, the Beyer Building was opened on the newly constructed main campus of the Technical University of Dresden. Designed by architect Martin Dülfer, the building was part of a large-scale expansion of the university and was hailed by contemporaries as the “Cathedral of Technology.” Its rooms provided a new home for the civil engineers, the geodesists, and the Scientific-Photographic Institute. With its 40-meter-high tower, the Beyer Building remains to this day the landmark of Dresden University, visible from afar.

On Open Monument Day, Sunday, September 13, 2026, TU Dresden invites interested visitors to its campus and into the building. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Beyer Building will be open for individual tours. Every hour on the hour, visitors can embark on a journey of discovery through the fascinating building or take a historical stroll across the TU Dresden campus, alternating with guided tours.

Following a comprehensive renovation and modernization in accordance with historic preservation guidelines, the Beyer Building has been shining in new splendor since 2025. Despite complex structural challenges, the historic fabric was preserved while simultaneously creating a modern, energy-efficient university building. The southeast entrance on Fritz-Foerster-Platz has been redesigned as the new main entrance to the Beyer Building. The interior is particularly noteworthy, as architect Martin Dülfer focused on high-quality finishes and a cohesive color and material scheme. The light fixtures were crafted according to his own designs; doors and built-in cabinets are finished in high-quality dark wood; and the exposed concrete in the stairwells was industrially prefabricated and sculpturally designed. In 1945, the attic and tower were destroyed, but the building itself remained largely intact, allowing classes to resume in 1946.

From Fritz-Foerster-Platz, the building marks the entrance to the historic main campus of TU Dresden, which was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century based, among other things, on Dülfer’s plans. Its buildings reflect the developments and upheavals of more than 100 years of university history.

On Open Monument Day, the following guided tours of the Beyer Building and the TU campus will be offered:

• 10 a.m. & 12 p.m.: Guided tour of the renovated Beyer Building led by: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Birgit Beckmann
• 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.: Campus tour focusing on the Nazi history of the Technical University of Dresden led by: Dr. Hagen Schönrich

The entrance to the Beyer Building is located on the southeast side of the building on Fritz-Foerster-Platz.
