TUD retains its top ranking as the university with the most patents in Germany

TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) secures its top position as Germany’s university that holds the most patents. With a significant lead, TUD University of Excellence, defends its first-place ranking, according to a new study and recent publication by the German Economic Institute (IW). The IW analyzed the number of patent applications from 2018 to 2022. TUD has filed more than 301 patents within this period.

Patents as indicator of value creation and prosperity

“Patents are an indicator of both value creation and prosperity. Our renewed top ranking in the IW report on the patent strength of German universities confirms our successful work in transferring innovative research into practice”, says Prof. Andreas Pinkwart, Director of the TUD Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|exite). “With TUD|exite, we support the entire innovation cycle, from initial ideas through patent management to spin-offs.”

Measured by the number of students, universities in Saxony and Thuringia file the most patents in a comparison with other German federal states. In terms of collaborations, universities in Thuringia, Berlin, and Saxony also rank at the top, following Saarland, Bavaria, and Rhineland-Palatinate. Universities in these federal states file their patents significantly more often in collaboration with research partners than other organizations.

TUD scientists work on the major questions of our time and make valuable contributions to solving global challenges. These include, in particular, the fields of microelectronics, energy technology, artificial intelligence, and medicine.
