From mud and lava to glue – mixtures of particles and liquids are everywhere, from industry to natural phenomena. Professor Élisabeth Guazzelli is internationally renowned for her outstanding research in the field of fluid mechanics, with a particular focus on complex fluids. Join us on June 5 at 6:30 pm to hear her live in the Fritz Foerster Building, Room 244, as part of the Frontiers in Science event series. 

She wants to apply her knowledge suspension flow behavior to geophysical flows – such as mudslides (debris flows) – to help protect communities and infrastructure in a changing environment.

Professor Guazzelli completed her doctorate in 1981 at Paris-Sud University, in 1986 at Aix-Marseille University and subsequently conducted research on particle flows with Georges Homsy at Stanford. Guazzelli has spent her entire career as a CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) researcher, where she was appointed Director of Research in the Exceptional Class in 2015 and heads the Matter and Complex Systems (MSC) laboratory at Université Paris Cité. Since 2005, Guazzelli has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, where she is currently JFM Rapids Editor. She is also Rector of the International Center for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy.

Over the course of her stellar career, Élisabeth Guazzelli has received numerous awards, including the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize in 2024, the American Physical Society Fluid Dynamics Prize in 2023 and the EUROMECH Fluid Mechanics Prize in 2016. Guazzelli was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2021 and appointed an international member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in 2020. In 2012, she was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor and received the Prix Paul Doistau–Émile Blutet from the French Academy of Sciences.

Since April 2025, Guazzelli has been conducting research at TU Dresden's Institute of Urban and Industrial Water Management, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
