More support for balancing work, studies and family: TU Dresden joins association for the development of family-friendly universities
Family-friendly and flexible conditions for work and study are important cornerstones for a modern employer and educational institution such as TU Dresden.
Promoting talent and maximizing the potential of all its members belongs to the university’s philosophy. TU Dresden has been a certified family-friendly university since 2007 and has established numerous support services from childcare to care counseling. These are supplemented by various regulations to support students and employees in balancing their various study, work and family responsibilities.
Today, TU Dresden has signed the “Familie in der Hochschule” (Family in Higher Education) charta and joined the association of the same name with the aim of entering into focused dialogue with other universities and improving the services it currently has to offer.
“In the “Familie in der Hochschule” association, we want to give clear signals for more family-friendliness while cooperating closely with other universities,” explains Marion Schmidt, Chief Communication Officer at TU Dresden, who signed the charta as a representative of the Extended University Executive Board. “Especially as a University of Excellence, we also see how a family-friendly environment is a criterion for success in preliminary appointment negotiations with top international researchers.”
TUD also wants to devise new projects for supporting fathers in the future. “When we support fathers in their family role, we also support mothers in their professional role,” said Franziska Schneider, Coordinator for family-friendliness at TUD. Schneider and her team are also active in supporting university members who care for relatives. In the future, TU Dresden will work towards tangible improvements in day-to-day working life by establishing alternative management models, such as part-time or shared management roles.
Background:
TU Dresden provides a number of support services for students and staff, such as flexible working hours and part-time studies, offering the opportunity to balance work and studies with personal responsibilities. Various childcare services belong to this range of services: In three establishments located close to the campus and a day-care center, there are close to 60 places available for the children of TU Dresden employees. Studentenwerk Dresden also offers childcare services for students. For situations where childcare is needed on short-notice, flexible childcare can be arranged. There is a vacation program for school children (grades 5–8). The Campusbüro Uni mit Kind – a cooperation between TUD and Studentenwerk Dresden – is the central point of contact for students and employees with families at the university thanks to its wide range of services. Moreover, independent care counseling has been available to TUD members on the campus since July 2019.
