Hydrogen expert Prof. Wasserscheid receives the Archimedes Science Award
For his work in the field of hydrogen technologies, German scientist Prof. Peter Wasserscheid was honored on September 9, 2026, by receiving the 2026 Archimedes Science Award.
The EUR 50,000 accolade was presented in Dresden under the auspices of TUD Dresden University of Technology by the Free State of Saxony and the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Alliance (DDc). The prize was launched in 2025 and has been awarded annually as part of the international conference "Building Bridges," which is hosted by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in close coordination with the State Chancellery of Saxony.
Prof. Wasserscheid is the Chair of Chemical Reaction Engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the director of the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy and the Institute for a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy, both of which belong to the Forschungszentrum Jülich.
The 2026 Archimedes Science Award recognizes a leading international researcher in the field of hydrogen technologies who has made pioneering achievements in chemical hydrogen storage. His laying the essential foundations for the safe and cost-effective handling of hydrogen in the existing fuel infrastructure is particularly laudable. Encapsulating the idea behind the Archimedes Science Award, his research has a special leverage effect, in this case for sustainable solutions for energy transformation.

The decision to bestow this honor upon Prof. Wasserscheid was made by a high-caliber jury comprised of the heads of Germany’s four major, non-university research organizations: Helmholtz Association, Max Planck Society, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Leibniz Association - as well as the President of the German Rectors' Conference. In addition, for the DDc Board: Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TUD, and Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.
About Prof. Peter Wasserscheid
Prof. Peter Wasserscheid is a pioneer in the field of chemical hydrogen storage who has made a decisive contribution to the development of new hydrogen storage cycles, optimized catalyst materials, efficient reactor concepts and convincing process innovations. He has notably advanced both the study and implementation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers—a technology that allows existing fuel infrastructure to handle hydrogen safely and economically. As an important vanguard and driving force, Prof. Wasserscheid also promotes the rapid transfer of scientific findings into practice in the Rhenish mining area. Coal-fired power generation in Europe's largest lignite mining region will end in 2030. As founding director of the Institute for a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy at the Forschungszentrum Jülich and speaker for the Helmholtz Hydrogen Cluster HC-H2, he is committed to establishing hydrogen technologies as a new economic mainstay in the region.

The award was established in 2025 and will be presented every year as part of this international "Building Bridges" conference. It stands for scientific excellence, which - in the spirit of Archimedes' Law of the Lever - combines fundamental findings with a high social, economic and technological impact.
