ZEISS expands its Innovation Hub in Dresden and intensifies cooperation with TUD
The new premises of the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden were opened on May 7, 2024. The new site offers to its twelve employees more space for additional innovation projects and the opportunity for further expansion. ZEISS is also using the location to expand its research activities in the field of “life sciences and health”. The team has moved from the premises in the building of the Else Kröner Fresenius Center (EKFZ) for Digital Health on the campus of the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital of the TUD Dresden University of Technology to a building in Blasewitzer Straße directly opposite the campus.
At this location, the ZEISS Innovation Hub will have an area of around 700 square meters and modern laboratories, which the Innovation Hub employees will share with teams from ZEISS Microscopy.
The ZEISS Executive Board and ZEISS staff also invited guests from Dresden's business and scientific communities to the opening ceremony, among them Prof. Dr. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TUD: "The partnership between ZEISS and TUD, and particularly in the life sciences, is steeped in tradition and is now enriched by another chapter. On the one hand, the opening of the ZEISS Innovation Hub in the immediate vicinity of our Life Sciences and Health Campus demonstrates the close ties in the fields of biology, bioengineering and physics, where there will certainly be overlaps with our Physics of Life Cluster of Excellence as an international beacon of cutting-edge research in these fields. On the other hand, it is a prime example of the attractiveness of Dresden's unique science and innovation ecosystem 'DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus'. This is where stakeholders from science, research and beyond come together to develop solutions for the challenges of our time on the basis of excellent research. Our TUD|excite Center of Excellence will play an essential role in the continued development and intensification of cooperative relationships with ZEISS."
"ZEISS is a growth-oriented company. We are investing in the future to ensure that our company continues to grow. The opening of the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden in the new premises is an example of our investments in infrastructure and in committed and successful teams," emphasized Dr. Karl Lamprecht, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of ZEISS. Since the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden was opened in 2021 in cooperation with TUD Dresden University of Technology, both the number of employees and the number of innovation projects have grown steadily. "The projects at the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden have successfully contributed to our ZEISS strategy in previous years. For this reason, we are planning to expand our activities at a larger location," says Lamprecht.
Part of the "DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus innovation ecosystem”
The ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden is one of the company's two Innovation Hubs, where its staff develop ideas and research approaches to realize innovative solutions for both ZEISS divisions and customers. The aim of the teams at the Innovation Hubs is to identify new technologies, evaluate their relevance for ZEISS and transfer them into concrete applications. The focus in Dresden is on innovation in the life sciences and the health sector.
Due to the immediate proximity to a large number of research institutions in the Dresden innovation ecosystem and the flexibility to work on explorative topics beyond the Divisions, we can break new ground in the field of health and life science at the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden," explains Dr. Kai Wicker, Head of the ZEISS Innovation Hub Dresden, the special and highly relevant research environment on site for ZEISS.
Bolstering the ZEISS location in Dresden and working more closely with TU Dresden is a component of ZEISS' global innovation strategy. The objective is to further expand the company's presence in the vicinity of research clusters and to ensure better networking with partners from science and industry. ZEISS also wants to find talented people in the region who are ready to help shape the innovative technologies of tomorrow.
The ZEISS Innovation Hubs
The ZEISS Innovation Hubs use their unique location at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the TUD Dresden University of Technology to identify promising but also out-the-box ideas, refine them in proof-of-concept projects and ultimately transfer them into ZEISS Divisions or independent ventures. Our multidisciplinary teams rely on their own expertise as well as a constant open exchange with university researchers, students, entrepreneurs, ZEISS experts and end users. The ZEISS Innovation Hubs are an open platform for collaboration and offer many opportunities to network, become involved and work together.
