The Arctic epitomises the ongoing transformation of the global climate like no other ecosystem. Numerous disciplines from environmental sciences to computer science are intensively researching this region in order to gather knowledge and data. Equally, the northern polar region is of great interest to the visual arts. Our current resident artist Lena von Goedeke at Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden is the best example of this. For years now she lives and works on Spitsbergen, her artistic works bear witness to the climate crisis and the alienation that goes hand in hand with changes to the ecosystem. Between permafrost mud sculptures and aesthetic photographs of the infinite polar firmament, in the exhibition GROUND TRUTH, von Goedeke brings the ‘extreme futures’ impressively and directly to our attention.
The opening of the exhibition GROUND TRUTH is part of the international conference “Shaping Transformation. University Collections in a Changing World” organised by the Office for Academic Heritage, Scientific and Art Collections of the TUD Dresden University of Technologies. From September 24 to 29, 2024, ICOM-UMAC (Committee for University Museums and Collections of the International Council of Museums) and UNIVERSEUM European Academic Heritage Network, two of the major international, professional associations on university collections and academic heritage will meet for their first joint annual conference.
Lena von Goedeke will also participate in the conference: On Thursday, September 26 2024, at 5:15 pm, she will speak at the roundtable ‘Collaborative Practices: Cross-encounters Between Art and Science in University Collections’ in the Lichthof of the Albertinum, Dresden State Art Collections.
We would also like to draw your attention to the public evening lecture by Prof. Dr. Wayne Modest on ‘Where Theory Meets Practice, or, Every Museum Should Be a University Museum’, which will take place on September 27 at 6:30 pm in the Heinz-Schönfeld-Hörsaal of TUD (Georg-Schumann-Str. 13, 01069 Dresden) as part of the joint annual conference of ICOM-UMAC and UNIVERSEUM European Academic Heritage Network 2024 immediately before the opening of the exhibition.
We look forward to seeing you on September 27 and send our best wishes from Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden
