Activating Heterogeneity: Intercultural and Inclusive Teaching Methods
Today’s classes bring together students with different cultural backgrounds, life stages, study habits, and prior knowledge. This practical workshop shows how to turn that heterogeneity into a learning asset. You’ll experience and adapt low-prep methods for inclusive discussions, group work that balances expertise, and transparent assessment practices. We’ll use the D.I.E. model (Describe–Interpret–Evaluate) to learn from “critical incidents” and design preventive routines. You leave with ready-to-use templates and a concrete action plan for your next session.
By the end, participants will be able to:

Map relevant dimensions of heterogeneity in their cohorts and set shared norms for collaboration.

Use at least 6 concrete, low-prep methods to leverage differences in class activities and assessment.

De-escalate and learn from “critical incidents” using the D.I.E. model (Describe–Interpret–Evaluate).

Anticipate how high/low-context communication, proxemics, and mono-/polychronic time impact participation and design accordingly.

Translate cultural frameworks (e.g., Dülfer/Bolten pyramid) into practical course design choices.
