Transformation EastDivision instead of unity? – Media structures, media content and media use in East and West Germany
The traditional journalistic media from the former West German states were imposed on the former East German states after reunification. More than a generation later, this is still a central factor in intra-German East-West differences. Media companies from the old federal states not only dominate nationwide reporting, they also own the regional East German media. In terms of content, historical influences are reflected in the choice of topics and perspectives: Media for the eastern states cover regional problems and social inequalities more often and tend to hold back with opinions. The population in the East German states has a greater mistrust of traditional media and turns more to alternative media. These differences not only reinforce peculiarities of perception, but also promote political and social divisions.
