Virtual Servers and Housing
Table of contents
- Providing virtual servers for TUD
- Establishing servers and IT components of TU-structural units that are necessary for services and for which ZIH does not offer an alternative to.
Services:
Electricity supply, network connections, environmental safety, fire safety and USV-safety of affected components upon consultation.
Options:
- Installation and hosting of virtual servers
- Housing of physical servers in the facilities of ZIH
- Virtual machines (servers) at Self Service Portal of TU Dresden
- Server housing only in justified exceptions in accordance with the people responsible for the computing room
- Preliminary discussions for planning and preparation
- Compliance with extension deadlines
- Availability of a contact person during core working hours
- The provision of your own suitable network technology can be a prerequisite for server housing
Operating outdated hardware is not sustainable due to the associated consumption of resources (electricity, cooling, space). In order to prevent the creation of an "IT museum" in the ZIH's free housing offer, this is therefore subject to a limit on the age of the installed hardware. Typical IT life cycles are around 6 years, after which the installed systems must be replaced or removed. In justified individual cases (especially small/efficient systems), the deadline can be extended in consultation with the ZIH.
- virtual servers are free of charge
- maintenance of costs for servers in housing will continue to be charged to the owner, operating costs will not be charged
Delivery time:
- virtual servers require typically 3-5 working days
- servers in housing depend on the necessary preliminary work
Operating and support times
Access to the computing rooms via consultation with the person responsible for the computer room.

Enterprise Cloud
As part of the server and service consolidation, the ZIH has created the possibility to provide virtual servers. The ZIH thus offers its customers the opportunity to operate their own services within the ZIH infrastructure. The services are provided by virtual servers (virtual machines - VMs) that users can manage themselves.

Research Cloud
With the Research Cloud, the ZIH provides another service based on a TU-internal cloud solution for research and test purposes. The Self Service Portal allows users to create, operate and manage virtual machines within their personal resource quotas. This cloud solution is available to TU Dresden employees exclusively for internal TUD provisioning and testing. The virtual machines are provided in an internal network area with limited access to the Internet and without firewall protection.

Advantages of virtualization
- Better utilization of resources because many virtual machines (VM) can share an actual physical machine
- Better security, since one server (VM) can be set up per service
- Better load distribution by clustering
- Reduction of hardware, maintenance and operating costs
- Reduction of administrative expenses
The fail-safe operation of the physical servers is also protected by the use of structured network connections and NAS or SAN storage systems. The HA clusters consist of at least 3 powerful servers.
The following advantages are obtained for the user of a virtual machine (VM):
- Users do not have to worry about the hardware (procurement, installation, power supply, air-conditioning, maintenance)
- A backup of the complete VM for the purpose of disaster recovery is carried out by ZIH (possibly at intervals of several days). If a daily backup of important data in the VM is required, a separate file-based backup may have to be carried out independently - for large amounts of data, please coordinate with ZIH (Backup and Archive).
