Workshop "Designing oral examinations in a gender-sensitive way, taking into account unconscious bias"
Oral examinations offer numerous advantages: they enable a direct exchange between teachers and students and allow a holistic assessment of knowledge and skills.
However, it is precisely in such conversational situations that unconscious biases can influence the assessment without us realizing it. Our brain resorts to automatic, mental shortcuts to process information quickly - this makes many things easier in everyday life, but in exam situations it can lead to stereotypes unintentionally shaping the perception and assessment of students. Gender, age, skin color or sexuality in particular play a role here and can lead to unintentional errors in assessment.
During the workshop, participants will gain insights into current (neuro)scientific findings on unconscious bias and reflect together on their own exam experiences in individual and group work. Strategies will be presented and tested on how to minimize the influence of bias and create a more open, fairer exam culture.
