FLiK modules
The teaching-learning opportunities offered by the centre encourage openness and respect for other fields of study and ensure an interdisciplinary dialogue takes place in terms of our quality objectives.
Students learn to reflect on their own subject, change their perspectives and gain deeper insights into research processes and contexts within their own field and others.
The Learning and Teaching within an Interdisciplinary Context (FLiK)" Format
A FLiK module (from the German “Forschen und Lernen im interdisziplinären Kontext)“) is spread across two semesters , starting in the first semester with a series of introductory lectures (including interdisciplinary tutorials and research visits). During the second semester, individual topics from the introductory lectures are explored in more depth during interdisciplinary project seminars and the FLiK workshop. These elements of the FLiK module build upon one another, thus giving students the opportunity to take an in-depth look at a particular research topic from a range of different perspectives.
The FLiK modules allow students to gain insights into the research being done in a range of different disciplines (state of research, methods, terminology, current discussions, etc.). They are familiarised with the process of doing research and learn step-by-step how to carry out their own research (developing research questions, carrying out investigations, selecting scientifically sound methods, cooperation within interdisciplinary student research projects, preparation and discussion of research findings, etc.).
FLiK modules use innovative teaching and learning formats, including learning through research, problem based learning and flipped classroom. Teachers and tutors actively receive teaching support from the ZiLL at TU Dresden.
FLiK ModulE STruCture
Each FLiK module starts with a series of introductory lectures where students are introduced to the topic and fundamental aspects presented. Unlike a traditional lecture series, this series of introductory lectures is taught by several different lecturers, each relating back to the content of previous and upcoming lectures. Similarities, differences and crossover points between the different disciplines are discussed, and content and methodical approaches are discussed, linked and differentiated. This approach, partially through team-teaching elements, enables interdisciplinary relationships to be intensively worked out and facilitates dialogue between different specialisms. Tutorials and research visits also take place alongside the lectures.
In the following semester, students attend a project seminar that builds upon the lectures from the previous semester, and the knowledge they have already acquired is further deepened. Interdisciplinary teams design and discuss their own projects with the help of teaching staff and using the methods learned from each of the specialist disciplines.
The FLiK workshop takes place parallel to the project seminar and builds upon the tutorials and research visits. Students work independently on their projects and further develop them as an interdisciplinary team.
