Practical Information
When does the Summer School take place?
From Sunday, the 5th September 2021 to Friday, the 10th September 2021
Where is the Summer School located?
Due to the Covid-19 crisis you will be able to choose whether you would like to participate Online or in person in Dresden!!! The city of Dresden is famous for its beautiful Baroque scenery and its rich cultural life, it also is home to one of Germany’s eleven Universities of Excellence. Besides, the history of the city has been closely intertwined with the major lines of 20th century European history. During World War II, large parts of the city were destroyed in the Dresden fire bombing. After the war, Dresden became part of the socialist German Democratic Republic. In our social activities, we will explore Dresden, its cultural life and its history and look for links to Human Rights questions. But we will also experience Dresden as a city that has a lot to offer in terms of freetime activities, from bars and restaurants to outdoor sports.
Who can participate?
This Summer School is for advanced students of law, political science, international relations and related subjects who are motivated to engage with the topic of Human Rights. Both, students with prior knowledge about the European Human Rights system, as well as students without such prior knowledge are invited to join, as the Summer School will offer an introductory block on the basics of the ECHR before it proceeds to the advanced themes of our focus topic. We encourage students from all regions around the world to participate!

Do I need to apply for a Visa?
In case you need a visa to participate in Dresden, please make sure to contact the German embassy or consulate responsible for your home country. You can find it under [your home country].diplo.de. Please find out whether it is at all possible for you to get a visa for Germany in the current situation. From our point of view, it would also make sense to ask when you would have to apply for a visa by the latest to make it to the summer school in Dresden in time. When doing so, please also consider that you might need to arrive in Germany at least 10 days before the summer school's first day if quarantine requirements apply to your country (More information on entry restrictions and quarantine regulations in Germany are available here) . In case you do not want to quarantine yourself or do not want to take the risk of doing so, please choose the online participation mode.
If you need an invitation letter, please write us an email. We will do everything to help you to get a visa; however, we have to inform you that even with an invitation letter some embassies and consulates will not be able or willing to hand out visas at the moment.
Do I receive a Certificate?
Upon successful completion of our Summer School, every student will receive a certificate with 5 ECTS.
What about Accommodation?
You are free to select your own accommodation in the city of Dresden. We have compiled a list of hostels that are relatively close to the University and affordable: here. In addition, we originally planned to arrange a couch-surfing platform where local students offer a couch to crush on. Yet, at the moment, we cannot say whether the Covid-19 situation in Germany will actually permit us to offer couch surfing in September. We will try to decide on this issue in the beginning of June.
Will there be Child Care?
We offer free child care. In case you would like to make use of this service, please let us know about the number of children and their age via the registration form. If you have any further question regarding child care do not hesitate to contact us.
