Institute of Geotechnical Engineering

The Institute of Geotechnical Engineerings at Technische Universität Dresden was founded in 1991. For the degree programmes Civil engineering, Architecture, Hydrosciences, Geography and Economics classes are given in the fields of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, rock mechanics, geology and, mineralogy.

The Institutes of Geotechnical Engineerings consists of the Chair of

• Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, directed by Prof. Ivo Herle,

and the working group of

• Applied Geology, directed by Prof. Heiner Siedel.

One focus of the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering is on teaching. Besides a total of 20 lecture series in the fields of Geotechnics and Geology, the supervision of student theses is being offered.

The second focus is set on research.

At the Chair of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering various soil types are investigated regarding their mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties. The obtained knowledge is applied to the development of constitutive models and simulations of numerical boundary value problems within the framework of geotechnical engineering.

The working group of Applied Geology undertakes research, among others, on the use of natural stones as building materials and associated problems like e.g. weathering, influence of salts and conservation.
