The Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics

The two Chairs of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Hydromechanics provide teaching and conduct research in a joint Institute (IWD) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden, covering the following topics:

  • Hydrostatics and hydrodynamics

  • Hydraulic engineering, watercourse development, and flood management

  • Hydrology

  • Water retaining structures and hydroelectric power plants

  • River engineering and waterway engineering

  • Marine construction and coastal management

  • Renewable energy and use of marine energy

  • Hydraulic testing

The IWD dates back to the Chair of Hydraulic Engineering founded in 1890 by Hubert Engels, which has had the first permanent hydraulic engineering laboratory since 1898.
