About the chair
The Chair of Structural Design functions as an interface between the Faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The objective of teaching is to convey a holistic design approach and to closely link structural design and architectural ideas.
The research activities at the Chair concentrate on topics at the boundary of architecture and civil engineering, with the aim of synthesizing the concerns of both disciplines. The overall focal point of the individual research topics is constituted by questions of form-finding, the interactions between form and load-bearing behaviour of particular construction methods and systems, and related morphological considerations.
The teaching leitmotif is the interweaving of static-constructive requirements and architectural ideas. Every single subject and module is committed to this goal. Through the constant negotiation of architectural form between physical necessity and creative freedom, students learn an integrated design approach in which the concerns of both areas mutually reinforce each other and thus create stringent solutions for high-quality architecture.
