Outdoor lecture at the memorial Sophienkirche in the module Structural Use of Glass / Glass Facades.
The memorial Sophienkirche in Dresden was redesigned with an innovative self-supporting all-glass cube to enclose the remaining fragments of the former Busmannkapelle and opened in 2020. The memorial at the former site of the Busmannkapelle is intended to memorialise the Sophienkirche in Dresden.
The glass structure consists of three-part glass fins around the building supporting the glass façade panels of approximately 3 m x 4 m laminated glass. Both the butt joint of the glass fins and the load transfer of the wind loads via the stiffening effect of the partially bonded façade were a special engineering and execution challenge. For the realisation of the glass structure, a special building approval had to be obtained from the highest building authority, as the construction goes far beyond current normative regulations.
As part of the lecture Structural Use of Glass / Glass Facades, the students got an insight into the glass construction details by Mr Fischer from glasfaktor Ingenieure. Afterwards, Prof. Glaser guided the participants through the memorial and gave an impressive report of the history of the Sophienkirche.
