IBB autumn excursion 2024
On the occasion of this year's autumn excursion of the Institute of Construction Management, we travelled to Berlin on 7 and 8 November with 35 interested students of Construction Management and Building Energy Management. During these two days, we had the opportunity to visit four exciting construction sites focussing on innovation and circularity.
First of all, the students were able to visit the construction site of the future timber competence centre in Berlin-Weißensee. The company welcomed us to the B&O Bau site together with research project partner Bauhaus Erde. The project reflects the many facets of simple and sustainable construction. The special feature of the conversion and renovation of the company premises into a campus is the use of local pine wood and clay. The materiality of the natural building materials remains visible and, in addition to the exhibition effect, will contribute to a pleasant office climate.
The next target was the Kurfürstenstrasse project, which is being realised by ZECH Hochbau AG. This mixed-use property is being developed with a 17-storey office tower and two adjoining residential sections. The building, which has been awarded platinum certification by the DGNB, features the use of certified building materials, the utilisation of renewable energy for heat generation and a green roof. On this construction site, the students were able to experience particularly well the importance of functioning construction site logistics for an intact construction process.
The next morning started with the Haus der Statistik. The consortium of Züblin and HOCHTIEF is realising an extensive refurbishment of the building complex for the client Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH. Here, the students were able to gain an impression of the challenges of building in existing structures. As the architecture is strongly orientated towards the existing building, but the requirements for fire protection etc. have changed, constructive measures must be taken to improve the load-bearing structure.
Before heading back to Dresden, we visited the Upbeat construction site in the afternoon. We were welcomed there by Wolff & Müller and August Reiners. With its impressive architecture, the office tower built for DKB forms the northern prelude to Europacity Berlin as a visible solitary building. The project poses exciting challenges due to the space available, such as construction without façade scaffolding or transporting concrete upwards using a concrete placing boom that grows with the building. The construction project is characterised by the use of CO2-reduced concrete.
The Institute of Construction Management would like to thank the participating students and, above all, the companies who made the excursion possible by inviting them to take part in their exciting projects.
